Day 26. Robe

Today we departed Adelaide for Robe, but not before driving down to the beach at Semaphore for a look. Our activities and the weather had made getting to the beach impossible during daylight hours up until now. It is a typical city beach on a weekend, catering for many city dwellers walking their dog and exercising along the many pathways. Then it was off to Robe. Whilst the beach was experiencing beautiful weather, Mount Lofty was shrouded in fog.

We selected a route including Mt Barker, Strathalbyn and Wellington. As we approached Wellington I noticed the graphic in the corner of the GPS had changed and could not distinguish it. Adrienne had a close look and said it looked like a boat. Then Tommy said “In 800m, take the ferry”. We were on the north western side of Lake Alexandrina, which is the mouth of the Murray River. To cross the river at this point, the South Australian Government has provided a vehicle ferry operating 24/7 for free.

After Wellington we travelled down the coast of SA until we reached Robe. The drive into Robe was hampered by what appeared to be fog, but we later learned to be light rain without any wind. The afternoon in Robe was miserable. A local told me that the weather was like this for most of the winter, and only the strength of the wind varied. I hope she was exaggerating!
