Day 24. Victor Harbor

Yes! That is the accepted spelling for Harbor. We left Adelaide for Victor Harbor under cloudy skies. At one point we had a good view of the Adelaide city skyline. Then, during the trip down, there was another very interesting skyline.

We travelled via the coast to Glenelg, and as time was passing we decided to take the direct route to Victor Harbor. We were having trouble accessing the freeway until we recalled a comment from Jim and Coralie earlier in the week that the freeway to Victor Harbor is only one way. Before noon you can only travel from Victor Harbor to Adelaide on the freeway. After noon you can only travel from Adelaide to Victor Harbor on the freeway. This is reversed on the weekends; as one would expect. Once we told Tommy that we wanted to avoid the freeway, he led us there superbly. This complexity is not programmed into TomTom.

Jim, Coralie and Ann (their visitor from Mount Isa) and Margaret (Ann's relative) were at home to greet us and we had morning tea before taking a driving tour of Victor Harbor. One of the treats was a trip to Granite Island. In days gone by Granite Island was the port through which produce to and from the Murray River valley accessed the outside world. The Murray River meets the sea at Goolwa and there was a rail connection between Goolwa and Victor Harbor.

A remaining portion of that rail connection, between Victor Harbor and Granite Island is still used today by tourists riding on a horse drawn tram.

See two pictures of Granite Island and another two looking back towards Victor Harbor.

We then enjoyed a long lunch at this superb part of the country under cloudless skies.

We said our goodbyes promising to return one day.
