Day 20. Coolgardie

Today we took the 40km trip to Coolgardie, from where the Western Australian gold rush started in the early 1890s. There are not many people left in the town today despite there being mines operating in the area. Coolgardie Shire has also made an effort to preserve their old buildings.

One of the special things we were lucky to see was an original house which was built for the first mining warden in this area, Warden Finnerty. The house was completed in 1905. The house is now under the care of the National Trust

From the view over the valley from the lookout, the hill in the foreground is actually a tailings dump from the mining activity over the years. This hill is larger than the natural hills.

There is a local museum with pieces of mining equipment on display in the main street. I was attracted by what appears to be a 1927 Pontiac. Whilst the condition of this unit is sad, its rare two door sedan body, as well as having all its panels, makes this a restorable proposition. Hopefully someone will be committed and permitted to do so in the future.
