Day 2 We go half way around Australia

The alarm sounded at 04:40. “You must do something about that alarm sound.” I had used my iTouch for the first time as an alarm clock because I was not going to have my trusty mobile phone on holiday.

The plan for the day was fly to Cairns, fly to Sydney and fly to Perth. What a day! I guess JetStar have a right to change their schedule and they did send us a request to confirm our acceptance of the change in departure time. They just did not highlight that there was also a change in the date by one day. Well, at least we were going to see some of the country.

The trip to Cairns with Virgin was very pleasant. Changing carriers in Cairns, with the upgrade to the Cairns Airport meant that our usual daily walk was not omitted. 100 metres from the arrival hall to the baggage carousel and then 150 metres back from the baggage carousel, through the arrivals hall to the check-in counter saw to that. Cairns Port Authority is always doing an improvement.

At 10:25 we were due to leave Cairns for Sydney, but a flat tyre on the aircraft delayed departure by 45 minutes. Flat tyres are common, aren't they?

We arrived in Sydney at 1:30pm and lined up to check our luggage in for Perth. The line-up meant a wait of 45 minutes. At our turn we were told there was too much traffic between now and our departure time for the airline to hold our luggage. We would have to store it in an area outside of the boarding quarantine area until JetStar was ready; about 6:00pm. T2 Sydney airport charged us $20 each for the security of our suitcases.

We finally got away to Perth at 8:30pm and landed at 01:15am Eastern Standard Time (11:15pm locally). It was a long day; but not stressful.
