Day 10. Essential Margaret River touring

With the arrival of first light, we saw the day was overcast and it was raining. It wasn't that cold to warrant a coat, but the rain was certainly not warm. We had spent our first night in Margaret River at a period boarding house, the Bridgefield Guest House. Now, this joint has some age on it and has been retained to reflect a bygone period.

Our room has a seriously sloping floor and a plunge bath on legs in the corner of this not too spacious bedroom. The en suite is another thing entirely. It is also in the same room, but divided by the type of swinging door normally associated with a saloon in Hollywood westerns. I must speak to my travel advisor about this one.

After breakfast we were on the move. But as no touristy things open around here until 10am we decided to fill in the morning with a visit to the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. This lighthouse complements the Cape Naturaliste lighthouse at the northern end of the Margaret River region. It was a pleasant drive through the stands of Kauri, vineyards and grazing land.

By the time we got to Leeuwin, the influence of a stiff breeze had dispersed the clouds, the rain had stopped and the sun was shining through. The Leeuwin lighthouse is similar, but due to the lie of the land, is much taller than Naturaliste. This lighthouse stands 39m tall which places the light 52m above sea level.

Leaving Leeuwin, we headed for the Boramup Gallery, which we could not find yesterday. With superior navigation skills, we found it today. Nice stuff, but dear. We came away empty handed.

Then it was off to Evans and Tate cellar door. We found this with relative ease and engaged in some pleasantly engaging wine tasting. We did not come away from here empty handed, committing a carton of their best Sauvignon Blanc on freight to home, plus some hand luggage as gifts on the way.

We arrived back in Margaret River in time for a late lunch, some shopping and then a Nanna Nap for Nanna.
